A Grapefruit Diet Menu
to sink your teeth into

The Grapefruit Diet Menu - As noted there are quite a few variations of this plan, one is as easy as eating what you please with the addition of this fruit before each meal. The two different menus below range from relatively relaxed - in an odd way - to an extremely calorie restrictive and highly nutritionally compromised version.

Diet Menu 1


·         Half a grapefruit

·         Two eggs prepared any way you like

·         Two slices of bacon (Substitute turkey bacon for a healthier alternative)

·         Cup of black tea or coffee and a glass of water

There are no real breakfast options here the above are all to be eaten together. You can fry, boil, poach or scramble eggs but with no added milk.


·         Half a grapefruit and a glass of water

·         Green salad (lettuce, tomato, red onion with your favourite low fat dressing)

·         As much meat as you want

There is a rather bizarre list of foods that are allowed (hot dogs…really?) and possibly an even weirder list of prohibited foods…upon which celery finds itself for some reason.

Allowed; red onions, capsicum, radishes, broccoli, cucumbers, carrots, leaf spinach, cabbage, tomatoes, green beans, lettuce, chili (no beans), mayonnaise, any cheese, hot dogs, low fat salad dressing and green vegetables.

Prohibited; white onions, potatoes, celery, pea, cereal, corn, starchy vegetables potato chips, peanut butter, pasta corn, chips, jam, sweet pickles, pretzels, coleslaw, salad dressing, dried nuts and fruit.


·         Half a grapefruit

·         Green salad with your favourite dressing (low fat)

·         May substitute a red or green vegetable cooked with butter for the salad

·         Your choice of meat or fish, as much as you like

·         One cup of tea or coffee…black of course!

Diet Menu 2


·         Half a grapefruit

·         Coffee or tea without milk or sugar


·         Half a grapefruit and a glass of water

·         Two eggs, cooked as you like

·         Cucumber and tomato salad with vinegar and lemon

·         One slice of dry toast

·         Black coffee or tea

·         Five ounces of lean meat (this works out to be 150 grams or ½ a cup)

·         Lettuce and tomato salad with lemon and vinegar

·         Coffee or tea

Clearly this Grapefruit Diet menu has very little to do with the fat burning properties of grapefruit and more to do with severe calorie restriction, the grapefruit may help you feel less hungry but this is not a healthy option for anyone. Interestingly it is proclaimed that no exercise is required with this diet, which is possibly a good thing as the body could not possibly sustain much activity on this meal plan.

We can however draw some positive ideas from the grapefruit diet. It is possible to benefit from the fat burning qualities of grapefruit or citrus in general, without actually following the Grapefruit Diet menu. Try these tips on healthier ways to work grapefruit into your diet:

·         Add a glass of grapefruit juice to your meals now and then.

·         Enjoy half a grapefruit for breakfast whenever you feel like it.

·         Grapefruit makes a great addition to many garden salads.

·         Combine grapefruit with fresh melon and blueberries for a delicious fat burning fruit salad.

And importantly if you are trying to actively lose weight; avoid sugar, processed foods, simple carbohydrates and saturated fats…the grapefruit is entirely optional!
