Rapid Weight Loss Diet Plan
believe it or not, they have their place!

A rapid weight loss diet plan can help motivate people, giving them the necessary boost needed to embark on a more long-term, healthier weight loss options.

There are many different versions of this type of plan on the market today, some endorsed by reputable dieticians, fitness instructors and even celebrity doctors. Other popular fad diets however such as the cabbage soup diet and the grapefruit diet, are driven by the online social community, not necessarily the best place to seek nutritional advice.

As an example of a rapid weight loss diet plan, the Optifast Weight Loss Program offers a ‘VLCD’ or very low calorie diet program that works upon the restriction of carbohydrates and overall total energy intake. The theory is it enables your body to use its fat stores as energy while still providing the bare minimum of nutrients. This program offers four ‘phases’ of nutritional supplements, the first of which replaces all food and beverages apart from water.

Phase 1 - INTENSIVE PHASE

Described as ‘rapid, initial and effective weight loss’ this jump start phase induces ketosis and is quite calorie restrictive at only 800 calories - the time period of this phase is undisclosed.

·         3 Optifast brand products

·         Two cups of low starch vegetables

·         One teaspoon of oil

·         And two litres of water per day

Low starch vegetables are vegetables low in carbohydrates including asparagus, string beans, bok choy, pak choy broccoli, brussel sprouts, celery, cabbage, capsicum, carrots, cauliflower, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce, leeks, mung beans, mushrooms, onions, radish, shallots, snow peas, spinach, squash tomato, watercress, and zucchini.

To be avoided therefore are corn, green peas, legumes, lentils, potato, pumpkin and sweet potato.

Phase 2 - TRANSITION PHASE

This phase is a little more generous at 800 - 1000 calories per day. This however is your nutritional allocation for an entire day.

·         2 Optifast brand sachets or bars

·         1 low calorie meal (approximately 400 calories)

·         At least 2 cups of low-starch vegetables

·         1 serve of fruit

·         1 serve of dairy

·         Two litres of water

Examples of a 400 calorie meal include asparagus soup, stir fried broccoli, cherry tomatoes, banana smoothie, green salad with grilled chicken strips, fruit salad with yoghurt, grilled salmon and roast zucchini.

Phase 3 - MAINTENANCE PHASE

·         1 Optifast brand product

·         2 low calorie meals (approximately 400 calories each)

·         At least 2 cups of low-starch vegetables

·         2 serves of fruit

·         1 serve of dairy

·         2 litres of water

Amounting to a maximum of 1200 calories per day - the minimum calorie intake required for women.

Phase 4 - STABILISATION PHASE

This phase is pretty much the ‘returning to normal’ phase as you aren’t required to eat the branded products any more, your calorie intake should remain at between 1200 and 1500 calories per day (keep in mind the minimum calorie requirement for women per day is 1200 calories).

·         3 low calorie meals (approximately 400 calories each)

·         At least 2 cups of low-starch vegetables

·         2 serves of fruit

·         1 serve of dairy

·         2 litres of water

Perhaps the most beneficial thing about this kind of rapid weight loss diet plan is that you are closely monitored by experienced professionals, meaning your 400 calorie meals are nutritionally guided to ensure they are healthy and balanced. However as you can see again this type of diet eliminates all processed sugars and white flour.  Also, there are no saturated fats and dairy is kept to a minimum.
