Colitis Diet Plan
Rebuild a healthy gut

With a Colitis diet plan, getting your diet and nutrition right is essential to coping with the symptoms of this illness. The aim is to focus on foods that reduce inflammation, re-establish healthy bacteria in the gut and to rest your intestinal tract.

Breakfast

  • Pancakes with grilled banana, maple syrup or honey and butter
  • Poached eggs with fried tomato
  • Fresh pawpaw with vanilla yoghurt
  • Soy yoghurt mango, banana and pawpaw smoothie with Almond milk and a side of stewed prunes
  • Toasted cheese and avocado crepes with cracked black pepper and sea salt
  • Spinach and mushroom omelette with basil

Different foods have different effects on individuals. What may prove to be a trigger food for one individual may have absolutely no effect upon another. Restricting entire food groups in the hope it will relieve the condition can often create more problems.

Lunch

  • Sweet potato frittata with mushrooms and shallots
  • Pumpkin soup with grilled prawns and Greek yoghurt
  • Chicken, lettuce and avocado wrap
  • Grilled chicken salad with grated beetroot & carrot, sliced red capsicum, baby spinach and sunflower seeds
  • Grilled zucchini, eggplant and pumpkin stacks with fresh olive oil pesto
  • Baked crumbed fishcakes with mint and lemongrass
  • Mini pizzas, chicken pizzas

It is very important for Colitis sufferers to drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration as absorption can often be affected, especially when chronic diarrhoea persists.

Snacks

  • Baked sweet potato chips
  • Soy yogurt
  • Homemade custard
  • Jelly cups with tinned fruit
  • Ginger nut biscuits
  • Fresh pawpaw (pawpaw contains an enzyme that aids digestion and relieves inflammation)
  • Sun dried figs, mango and banana

For those following a Colitis diet plan, avoid foods with caffeine which can often cause gastrointestinal distress in sufferers. Caffeine containing foods to avoid include coffee, black and green tea and cola; in some cases all soft drinks should be avoided.

Dinner

  • Grilled fish with roast vegetable salad (roast pumpkin, red onion, and capsicum tossed with spinach, capers, sunflower seeds, alfalfa and Dijon mustard)
  • Roast lamb with baked pumpkin, parsnip and honeyed carrots
  • Baked Salmon with mashed potato, pumpkin and peas
  • Homemade sushi rolls with fresh tuna or salmon, avocado and cucumber
  • Chicken mince sausage rolls with reduced fat puff pastry
  • Cream of cauliflower soup with parsley baked fish

Certain foods actively fight inflammation. Oily fish, like salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to help reduce inflammation. Other foods that are of particular use include dark leafy greens, soy products, beetroot, almonds, capsicum, turmeric and ginger.
